September 7 Daily Devotional

Twilight: Our Blessed Hope

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In September we read Paul's letter to Titus and his very last letter, called 2 Timothy. Paul's concern is that the true gospel be preserved and proclaimed by a faithful church.

Bible Reading:

Titus 2:11–15

Bible Text:

We wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13).

Devotional:

Hope is an essential word in the Christian confession. The Christian church always lives in expectation, like a couple that waits for a baby. The coming event is never far from the mind, and it is a matter that requires prayerful preparation.

We anticipate Jesus' coming as Lord. Paul calls him "our great God and Savior Jesus Christ." He gives him the highest name, because he contrasts the appearance of grace with the appearance of glory. At his first coming Christ was hardly noticed. At his second coming no one will be able to deny that Jesus—"our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ"—is Lord.

Today we confess our faith in spite of what we see. It is not yet apparent that Jesus is Lord, because he has not yet appeared in glory. In the present age money seems to be lord, business sets the tone, armament is power, and death has the last word. But Christians don't believe that. They believe that Jesus is Lord. He is Lord over their money and business, he is the source of all power, and he has made even death his servant.

Jesus has the last word. He will make his appearance on earth with a brilliance that outshines any radiance known to human beings. When he comes, our hope will be fulfilled, and everyone will have to admit that Jesus is Lord.

Therefore we will not grow weary. We will steadfastly continue in grace until he appears in glory.
