Twilight: A Man with a Mission

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In September we read Paul's letter to Titus and his very last letter, called 2 Timothy. Paul's concern is that the true gospel be preserved and proclaimed by a faithful church.

Bible Reading:

2 Timothy 1:1–2

Bible Text:

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 1:1).

Devotional:

This is the last letter we have from Paul. He was in prison when he wrote it. He knew that his work was finished and that he would soon die.

What did he think about in his last days and hours? What were his regrets, worries, hopes? In this letter, we'll find that his main concern was for the preservation and proclamation of the gospel he had preached.

In 2 Timothy, as in all his letters, Paul introduces himself as an apostle of Christ Jesus, an authorized envoy of the Lord. His apostleship was not based on his own imagination, he says, for he was an apostle "by the will of God." His mission concerns "the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus."

In a sin-sick, dying world, Paul was entrusted with the Word of life in Christ. That was his burden and his joy.

If you had been entrusted with the cure for cancer and you were locked up in a dungeon, writing your last letter, you would be very anxious for the prescription to get into the right hands and that it be followed carefully.

That's how it was for Paul. He had this great trust and responsibility—to transmit the apostolic faith about the promise of life in Christ Jesus. So he wrote a last, urgent letter to Timothy and to the entire church.

"Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord" to all who read this urgent message.
