In September we read Paul's letter to Titus and his very last letter, called 2 Timothy. Paul's concern is that the true gospel be preserved and proclaimed by a faithful church.

Bible Text:

From infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 3:15).

Devotional:

First Paul told Timothy that he should imitate his teacher. Now he says that there was a prior influence in Timothy's life that must come to full bloom: his mother and grandmother used to read the Scripture to him. Like thousands of youngsters today, Timothy learned from the Bible at a very early age.

Not everyone who has Bible stories read to her or him as a youngster grows up to be a woman or man of God "thoroughly equipped for every good work" (v. 17). That happens only when our roots strike deeply into those Scriptures and bring up the wisdom into our lives, as plants get vigor from a hidden source.

The key that opens the wisdom of Scripture to us is "faith in Christ." All of the Bible has its focus on him. And our faith in him provides the handle with which to draw on all the wisdom of the Scriptures.

The power and usefulness of the Bible—"for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (v. 17)—can be explained only by the fact that the Bible comes from God. The Breath of God produced the Scriptures. The wisdom that the Bible produces in people is the work of God himself.

It goes without saying that the books of the Bible were written by people. The books are as different as the times in which they were written and the personalities of their writers. But they can accomplish their high goal because they have their origin in God.
