Twilight: The Peaceful Kingdom

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

Isaiah's God is the Holy One of Israel. In God's presence we have to be morally clean. God has chosen his Servant, who will rule in righteousness in a kingdom of peace.

Bible Reading:

Isaiah 2:1–5

Bible Text:

They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks (Isa. 2:4).

Devotional:

In this passage God gives a vision of something that will happen in "the last days." Those are the days in which you and I are living (see Acts 2: 17, I Cor. 10:11).

The vision has three outstanding features. First, Mount Zion with the temple has become visible for the whole earth. All eyes are fixed on Jerusalem.

Second, from the ends of the earth people journey to Zion. They come not to admire the sights but to learn from God: "God will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths." The peoples of the world recognize that we receive wisdom and salvation only through the God of Israel.

And finally, swords are converted to plowshares and spears to pruning hooks. The tools of war are transformed into implements of cultivation. The arms by which nations destroy other lives in bloody attempts to secure their own are changed to promote living. People concentrate on cultivating creation. They strive for goodness and prosperity.

This vision, so unlikely in the days of Isaiah, is now being fulfilled. Millions of non-Israelites have found their way through Jesus Christ to the God of Israel. Today they walk in his paths. The King of Peace is already enthroned. And every heart that's ruled by God is transformed by his love to promote peace and justice.
