Twilight: The Banquet of Zion

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

Isaiah's God is the Holy One of Israel. In God's presence we have to be morally clean. God has chosen his Servant, who will rule in righteousness in a kingdom of peace.

Bible Reading:

Isaiah 25:1–8

Bible Text:

On this mountain he will destroy the shroud ... he will swallow up death ... he will wipe away the tears (Isa. 25:7–8).

Devotional:

When Babylon is destroyed, the God of Jerusalem calls all people to a banquet on Mount Zion. Or, when human pride and rebellion have been eradicated, the humble who trusted in the Lord may all come and feast with him.

God will treat them at his table. He will make good on all his promises. The shroud of mourning that surrounds the lives of all persons and all communities will be torn up and removed forever. Death itself, the last enemy, that until now swallows all that lives, will itself be swallowed. And God will say: "Now is the feast, my children; no more tears on your faces. Here, I will wipe them away. I now remove all the pain and unfairness you suffered from the earth."

What a marvelous picture. In the New Testament the picture has been repainted for us and the pledges renewed. But the basic traits have remained since the days of Isaiah. God promises to come with salvation for those who wait for him—and with judgment for those who think they are autonomous, self-governing, self-sufficient, and proud.

There will be an end to the pain. The death of death is coming. And all our hurts will be healed.

We wait for the Lord. Although we walk through a valley of tears and fears, we encourage each other to persevere, because our journey will lead us to the banquet of the redeemed.
