Twilight: The Coming Revival

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

Isaiah's God is the Holy One of Israel. In God's presence we have to be morally clean. God has chosen his Servant, who will rule in righteousness in a kingdom of peace.

Bible Reading:

Isaiah 44:1–5

Bible Text:

"1 will pour water on the thirsty land ... I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring" (Isa. 44:3).

Devotional:

Water is the best figure of speech for the Holy Spirit. Visit a place that has had a prolonged drought, where all vegetation is dry and dead, and you can almost hear the parched land beg for the raindrops to fall. Similarly, the church and the people who have become withered and worldly will die unless the Spirit of God brings fresh life from above.

This particular prophecy speaks of the endtime when the remnant of the dying nation will be revived by God's Spirit. It will be a revival unlike anything seen in the Old Testament era. The Spirit will not merely come to a prophet and a priest and a chosen individual. The Spirit of God will be "poured out" like water.

We saw the fulfillment of this prophecy on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2). One hundred and twenty people were gathered together, and the Spirit was "poured out" on them like water. Then, beginning at Jerusalem, life sprouted "like grass in the meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams;' all the way to Rome.

The Spirit leaped all racial barriers, as God promised through Isaiah. "One will say 'I belong to the Lord,' another will call himself by the name of Jacob; still another will write on his hand, 'the Lord's' and will take the name of Israel" (v. 5).

Pentecost marked the beginning of the ingathering of the nations. And we are still praying for the showers of God.
