Twilight: Good News: God's Kingdom Is Coming

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

Isaiah's God is the Holy One of Israel. In God's presence we have to be morally clean. God has chosen his Servant, who will rule in righteousness in a kingdom of peace.

Bible Reading:

Isaiah 52:7–12

Bible Text:

Burst into songs together, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the LORD has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem (Isa. 52:9).

Devotional:

Jerusalem saw the messengers coming, running over the hills that surround the city. They came ever closer. Now Jerusalem could hear the messengers' cry: "Listen, your watchmen lift up their voices." These are shouts of joy. "Peace!" they shout. "Peace!" The Lord has come to Jerusalem. "Your God reigns."

This is the vision of the gospel that was first proclaimed to shepherds by an angel: "I will bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people; today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ, the Lord" (Luke 2: 10).

When the good news carne, only a few people still expected God to "comfort his people" and "redeem Jerusalem." But Simeon was one of the few "waiting for the consolation of Israel" (Luke 2:25). And Anna kept praying to God. In fact, she had contact with a group of people who were all "looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem" (2:38).

What Isaiah saw in a vision about "the consolation of Israel" and "redemption of Jerusalem," Luke reports as a fact. With the coming of Jesus, God has begun to set up a kingdom on earth. That's why Jesus began his ministry by saying, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God" (Luke 4:43).

Burst forth into singing. Your God reigns!
