Twilight: The Good News

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

The Prince of Peace, the Son of David, was announced by Isaiah. The story of his coming was proclaimed by the evangelists, each with a different emphasis. Jesus made God's kingship real in this world. Today, the kingdom is here—and it is coming.

Bible Reading:

Luke 2:8–12

Bible Text:

"I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.... Today a Savior has been born" (Luke 2:10–11).

Devotional:

On this night, nearly two thousand years ago, an angel—God's messenger—proclaimed the good news for the first time. Today all of us are messengers of the good news. Every man, woman, and child who knows the Savior must tell the story about Jesus.

The first hearers of the good news were shepherds who were on the night shift in a field near Bethlehem. They were ordinary people who had a fairly rough job. When David was young, he also shepherded in this area.

The shepherds were dead-scared when their field was lit up by the glory of the Lord. You and I would tremble too if we suddenly stood in the bright, burning presence of God. But the angel said: "Fear not," because this is gospel night. Jesus has come to earth to save trembling sinners and to give them joy.

The distance between heaven and earth is bridged this night. For the Savior has come from heaven to earth. "Peace on earth."

Our fear of the wrath of God will be stilled. The sign of God's goodness is a baby, an utterly dependent human being, through whom God will reconcile the world to himself.

Here is joy to the world. All that God tells us in the Bible is essentially gospel, good news. It's peace. The fear is past, the battle is over.

And God is with us.
