Twilight: Glory to God

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

The Prince of Peace, the Son of David, was announced by Isaiah. The story of his coming was proclaimed by the evangelists, each with a different emphasis. Jesus made God's kingship real in this world. Today, the kingdom is here—and it is coming.

Bible Reading:

Luke 2:13–20

Bible Text:

A great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest" (Luke 2:13).

Devotional:

The angels were always a step ahead of us. They were the first gospel preachers, and they formed the first choir. At the resurrection of Jesus, they were already laughing while we were still weeping. "Don't look for the living among the dead," they said. At Jesus' ascension they told us to quit staring at heaven and to get on with the work on earth. It was only after the Spirit himself came into our hearts that it was our turn to be the good-news-tellers (ev-angel-ists) of the mighty works of God.

The angels taught us to sing. They may still be singing along with our Christmas choirs in a hundred thousand churches—because angels love to worship God. They taught us forever to start on the right note: "Glory to God in the highest! Thank and worship God!"

God revealed his heart to us when he gave us his Son. Now we know something about God that was hidden from all the Old Testament saints. He loved us so much that he gave us his Son. Glory to God in the highest!

The peace of heaven now descends to earth, because God's Messiah has come. The shalom of the kingdom will become a reality. We will have peace with God and with each other. And all things are going to be what they were intended to be.

Glory to God and peace on earth! All of creation is learning to sing the doxology.
