Twilight: Stand Firm Till the End

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

The Prince of Peace, the Son of David, was announced by Isaiah. The story of his coming was proclaimed by the evangelists, each with a different emphasis. Jesus made God's kingship real in this world. Today, the kingdom is here—and it is coming.

Bible Reading:

Lukle 21:34–36

Bible Text:

" ... that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36).

Devotional:

The final warning is to remain alert: watch and pray, so that on the last day you may be able to stand on your feet before the Son of Man.

We must escape the suction of the falling kingdom by standing up at Jesus' side. Throughout the Bible God warns us to "stand" and not to be bowled over, either by a subtle temptation or by a bold attack.

When the crowd in the valley of Dura heard the music, they all went down before the ninety-foot idol that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. Only three young men stood ramrod at attention. Nobody applauded their courage. They simply obeyed God, even though it landed them in the fiery furnace (Dan. 3).

"Stand" is the word used in the spiritual battle scene of Ephesians 6. "Take your stand against the devil's schemes." "Put on the full armor, so that you may be able to stand." "Stand firm then, with the belt of truth.... "

"That you may be able to stand before the Son of Man." That does not mean that we will not kneel before Christ. Of course we will. But this is military language. "Stand" as in "stand at attention." We must make the final salute and say, "Mission accomplished, Sir!"

And he will say: At ease. "Enter into my rest."
