Thine Is My Heart: Devotional Readings from the Writings of John Calvin

John Calvin (compiled by John H. Kromminga)

Bible Text:

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. —I Corinthians 15:20

Devotional:

But when we pass from his death to his resurrection we recognize that our Lord Jesus has won the victory for us. And this is what St. Paul says in that other passage in II Corinthians that he died in the weakness of his flesh, but was raised in the power of God his Father. So this order that the Prophet observes aims at making us certain that our Lord Jesus has possession of his life and is Lord and Master over it, seeing that this has been declared in his person.

Let us understand, then, that the Son of God was brought to nothing for us, but was nevertheless not stript of his power; and that though he kept himself hidden for a little while, his resurrection bears such certain witness to him, that we have no excuse for not putting our trust completely in him and boldly scorning the devil and sin. For Jesus Christ has triumphed over them and the hand of God upheld him to free him from his bonds; and likewise he was exalted to be the vicegerent of God his Father, and, as I have already said, to bear sovereign rule over the world.

This then, in a word, is what we have to remember when it is said that he was raised from prison and from judgment. —Sermons on Isaiah

John Calvin was the premier theologian of the Reformation, but also a pious and godly Christian pastor who endeavored throughout his life to point men and women to Christ. We are grateful to Reformation Heritage Books for permission to use John Calvin's Thine Is My Heart as our daily devotional for 2013 on the OPC Web site. You can currently obtain a printed copy of that book from Reformation Heritage Books.

Dr. Joel Beeke, who is editorial director of Reformation Heritage Books, has this to say:

"Calvin shows us the piety of a Reformed theologian who speaks from the heart. Having tasted the goodness and grace of God in Jesus Christ, he pursued piety by seeking to know and do God’s will every day. He communed with Christ, practicing repentance, self-denial, and cross-bearing. Moreover, his theology worked itself out in heart-felt, Christ-honoring piety. The selections of this devotional bear this out, and hopefully will be used by God to direct pious hearts in our own day."

These devotional readings from John Calvin were compiled by John H. Kromminga. Be sure to read his "Introduction" to John Calvin's Thine Is My Heart.
