Do you take time to show appreciation for your mother? Mothers are to be valued highly, honoured and respected. Our mothers went through great pains to bring us into the world. Sometimes children will play the one parent off against the other or try to take advantage of their mother because physically she is not as strong as their Dad is. A mother may say to her disobedient child, “Wait until your father comes home. He will deal with your misbehaviour.” Nevertheless, we are not called to honour and respect someone as an authority figure because they are stronger than we are, but because the Lord has placed them over us.

A beautiful example of how mothers are to be honoured is given to us in Proverbs 31:28-29, “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many daughters have done well but you excel them all.’” Since both fathers and mothers are to be honoured, both have the duty to instruct their children in the matters of the kingdom. A husband should not leave spiritual instruction up to his wife. To tell a child, “Go ask your mother. That’s her department,” sends out a wrong message to children. Parents are to work together and to pull in the same direction. It is easy for fathers to get busy with all sorts of worthwhile things but fail when it comes to fulfilling their God-given task towards their children. The Lord uses both fathers and mothers for the edification of His church.

In our culture some Christian women feel pressured to be anything but a mother. Others are overwhelmed trying to juggle all the responsibilities given to them within and outside the home.

Mothers are to be respected by their children for the place they have within the home. They play an important role in the relay race of faith. Mothers who train their children to be respectable citizens in the kingdom of heaven are to be valued very highly.

Look for ways to honour and encourage your mom. Husbands and children, make it possible for moms to be moms. Yes, you are on to something good when you honour her and consider her to be of high value. Stand up and salute your mother!
