Job 37:14–38:3

Devotional

After so many speeches and rebuttals, the Lord speaks to Job out of a whirlwind. How ironic! Earlier Job had said, “If I called and He answered me, I would not believe that He was listening to my voice. For He crushes me with a tempest and multiplies my wounds without cause.” (9:16-17) Now the Lord answers Job out of the tempest—the very means Job had claimed God was using to torment him! The manner in which the Lord speaks to Job already indicates that Job must bend under God’s mighty hand. It is a miracle of divine mercy that the Lord does not consume Job with the fire of His wrath or with the force of His wind! Job sees a manifestation of the Lord’s power and yet he comes through it alive!

The living God answers Job out of the whirlwind. Job is answered by the LORD—the same covenant God who came to His children immediately after they fell into sin, and spoke words of grace and mercy. The fact that God stoops down to answer Job is a miracle, displaying God’s compassion. The Lord listened to many wrong and foolish words coming forth from the mouth of Job. He heard Job curse the day of his birth. God listened as Job challenged His justice. He heard Job say, “Oh, that I had one to hear me! Here is my mark. Oh that the Almighty would answer me, that my Prosecutor had written a book!” (31:35-37)

The book of Job is a prime example of God’s patience. So often the LORD hears us speak in ignorance, pride and foolishness. He answers in His time and will knock pride out of our system, just as He did to Job. The Lord will not quit speaking until Job is brought to his knees in true repentance stating, “I despise myself, and repent in sackcloth and ashes.” (42:6)

The LORD is faithful and takes pity on His children. This is why He answered His suffering servant, Job. We today can have even greater confidence. God tore open the heavens and came down (Isaiah 64:1). He stooped down and sent us His Son, thereby answering the cries of all those who seek Him. On the cross Christ suffered the anguish and the terror of hell. During the three hours of darkness the Lord did not answer. The heavens remained shut. The storm clouds brought down on Jesus the full fury of God’s wrath so that we may enjoy the sunshine of God’s grace and hear God’s answer to us in Christ.
