Devotional

Children play an important role in the restoration of God’s people to their original mandate. After the fall into sin, the LORD makes a new beginning and commences His work of recreation by establishing a covenant with believers and their children. He builds a name for Himself, not in what is considered strong, but in what is weak and simple.

In Psalm 8, David uses military terminology to describe the importance of children in the covenant. What comes forth from the lips of children, in a confession of God's greatness and glory, is a fortress of strength against the enemy. God uses children to silence Satan.

Think about that for a moment! Do you really believe the power of Satan can be stopped by what comes forth from the mouth of children, grandchildren or from the little ones in the congregation? Isn’t David exaggerating? In the twelfth century, children were sent out on a crusade to free Jerusalem. The mission failed miserably. Thousands of children were killed and died of starvation along the way. If children couldn't survive a physical war, how will they stand in a spiritual battle against Satan? How can David say the Lord ordains strength through the children? Is the devil silenced by what proceeds from the mouth of babes and nursing infants?

David rejoices at the cry of every child born into the covenant because he realizes that the Lord claims them for His army right from their birth. The Lord listens to babies and young children; in their voices He hears a symphony of praise.

Victory in the battle, however, does not depend on the children. Children in the covenant are conceived and born in sin and by nature are no better than children of the world. Their reason for crying as babies can be very sinful and selfish. The victory over the enemy does not hinge on the children, but on the Lord Jesus who gathers to Himself both the sheep and the lambs. He uses the children in His army to highlight the sovereignty of His grace. Yes, the ways of our God are truly amazing!
