Like a Rock

Peter G. Feenstra

He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God. (Ps. 62:6–7)

Psalm 18:1–3

Devotional

After much thought, reflection and evaluation of all his avenues of reliance, David emphatically declares, “Only in God can I be still, confident, content and submissive.” We learn to say that through life experience. Throughout the years of our life we as believers come to see how the Lord acts in the lives of His children according to His sovereign purpose. But even then, a child of God needs to remind himself that his soul can only be still if his attention is turned toward the Lord. Did you notice the psalm not only says “My soul finds rest in God alone,” but in verse five says, “Find rest, O my soul in God alone”? There are times when we wrestle in faith and need to admonish ourselves to turn to the Lord.

The only true foundation of confidence and trust is God. He is our rock, salvation and fortress. Using the image of rock, David portrays God as an unshakable, impregnable source of protection. A child of God can find protection and safety in this fortress. God is not only strong, but also loving (12). God’s powerful love and loving strength will provide more secure protection for His children than all human power. Knowing that, we can say confidently, “I will never be shaken!”

The foundation of our confession, “Only toward God is my soul still,” is in the fact that we know God as our rock and our salvation. When you think of rocks, what is it that comes to your mind? Rocks are old! They endure the test of time. If rocks could speak they would be able to tell you many stories of storm and wind and trouble! What a history a rock could give you of the tempests to which it has been exposed! Along the ocean shores, rocks have felt the raging of the sea as mighty waves crashed against them. Ships, houses and the inventions of man have been broken to pieces by the force of wind and waves, but a rock remains solid and unmoved. Well, this is our God! He is our Rock! He is rock solid in all His ways, even though nations rage against Him. Like a rock our God is a sure, dependable and trustworthy defence! And we shall not be moved when we stand on the rock of God’s promises. “God is my rock!” What a glorious thought! No wonder we can be quiet and still and trust in Him. Our whole life is built on the bedrock of His promises. This speaks profoundly of the essence of the Christian religion. Only God is my rock and my salvation. He alone is the Rock of Ages!
