Devotional

When we trust in the Lord we believe and have confidence that everything will work for good because we are in good hands. To trust is to acknowledge that you are helpless in yourself and secure in another. If you trust a person you feel safe telling him or her something confidential. In our human relationships trust is very fragile. It is easily shattered by a lack of communication or misunderstanding. Mistrust causes tension that can last for years. This is why our human relationships of trust need to be determined by our trust in God. The Lord wants us to trust in Him and to do so in the way He has disclosed to us in His Word. Our view of God has a deep and profound effect on how we trust in Him. He is the living God and His sovereignty extends over everything. He who exercises ultimate control, even over painful and unjust events, works all things for good. He gives us life and provides for all our needs.

The Lord God has never broken any of His promises and therefore He deserves all our trust. He alone is to be trusted. That is why Psalm 146:3 says “Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.” Proverbs 3:5,6 instructs us with the beautiful words, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.” Warning those who do not trust in the Lord, the prophet Jeremiah uses extremely strong language: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the LORD.” (Jer 17:5) A person who trusts in himself will not go through the open doors of the kingdom of heaven.

Trusting in anything or anyone other than the Lord ultimately leads to grief and trouble. The more we learn to know the Lord, who He is, and what He has done for us in the past, the more we learn to love Him and trust Him. He can be trusted because every word He speaks is true. This does not mean we will never have questions or doubts. Yet, in spite of our fears and doubts we continue to believe that He is in control and will work all things for the salvation of His people. Throughout each day of our life we need to trust in the Lord’s direction. He has a master plan and that is why He can be trusted with the micro details. Take the time to acknowledge God and, as you go about your work, trust that He will direct your paths.
