Eternity in Our Hearts

Peter G. Feenstra

Devotional

When the Lord created us as human beings, He gave us the capacity to look beyond the present and into the future. The Lord put it into our hearts to probe and search, to be intrigued by the past and to want to know what the future holds. Doesn’t this explain why a young child will follow you around the house asking, “Why Mom?” and “How come, Dad?” The Lord has put it into our hearts and minds to ask questions, to step back and assess what life is all about. He has given us the ability to have a perspective on life that moves us beyond what we see in our immediate environment. He gives us the ability to connect the events of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Since God has put eternity in our hearts we can plan ahead in our work, in the education of our children and in all of our activities.

Nevertheless, the Lord has put a limitation on what we can know. Not everything about God’s plan and purpose has been disclosed to us. God hasn’t disclosed every detail regarding His will and we may not inquisitively pry into those things that have not been revealed to us. The Preacher says in the last part of verse 11, “...no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.” Our knowledge of God is limited. Those limitations must bring us to God’s revelation—to an above-the-sun perspective. From our side we have many questions about the goal and purpose of life. We do not fully comprehend why things happen the way they do. Life is brought into focus when we put on the glasses of Scripture.

The Lord has put a sense of history into the mind and hearts of all people. Believers, however, are given more. The wisdom of God and knowledge of His Word provides us with answers. Through the illumination of the Holy Spirit we come to realize all things are made beautiful in Christ. Currently, we do not know the exact purpose behind events that happen but we believe God will bring good for those who love Him. The valleys that seem so dark and gloomy are leading us to a bright and glorious future. The future is guaranteed because at one point in history God made the cross of Christ beautiful in its time. The work and ministry of our Saviour allows us to live with perspective—and that’s what makes what we have in Christ beautiful at this time.
