Does God Really Care?

Peter G. Feenstra

Lift up your eyes on high, And see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, By the greatness of His might And the strength of His power; Not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, And speak, O Israel: “My way is hidden from the LORD, And my just claim is passed over by my God”? Isaiah 40:26–27

Devotional

When Christians are downcast, depressed and despairing they will question whether God really cares for them. They will say things like, “If God is concerned about me, why would He let this happen to me?” These are the kind of things Isaiah’s contemporaries are saying. But God challenges the validity of their reasoning. Through a series of rhetorical questions the Lord drives home a powerful point. Have the people not known? Have they not heard? The people of God need to examine their thoughts, attitudes, and actions about Him. Their vision is blurred when they complain, “My way is hidden from the LORD.”

How can Israel be assured of the Lord’s care? How can we know for sure that adversity will be turned to our good? The answer is in the stars! Our galaxy and those beyond our universe are filled with billions of stars. We have names for some of the constellations but the Lord has a name for all the stars and He maintains their place in the universe! Not a single star can say, “My way is hidden from the LORD.” The awesome vastness of the heavens ought to fill our hearts with joy and comfort. Every time we look at the stars in the sky we have evidence that it is unbelief to think or say, “My way is hidden from my God. Nobody would care if I was dead.” Even if every other human being doesn’t care, the Lord does!

In frustration people will blurt out, “Give me one good reason for living.” You may have said it yourself. That’s when you need to look to the heavens. There, on display, you have more than a billion reasons for living. The Lord, who created the universe and knows all the stars by name, has the power to handle our most difficult problems and troubles. There may be times when you feel like you are at the end of your rope but God says, “Come, hold My hand. I have the power to take you through it. I look after the stars! I have the entire universe in My hand and every star has its own place and purpose. Don’t get trapped in your own troubles but remember My greatness, ability and omnipotence. I am your awesome God.”

God’s grandeur puts our problems into perspective. See your life against the backdrop of the majesty of God. Indeed, don’t lose sight of the stars!
