Devotional

What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning? What gives you the strength to make it through a day? Do you have anything positive going on or do you dread what the day may bring?

God’s grace in Jesus changes what we see when we open our eyes to a new day. Maybe you are not a morning person and do not always feel like getting out of bed, but having faith in God gives you reason to rise and shine! Have you ever given this much thought?

The author of Lamentations faces major troubles as he opens his eyes to a new day. The people of God are not living in a way that is pleasing to the Lord. But the prophet finds great comfort in God. God’s mercy is new every morning and that’s what gives him (and us) the energy to get out of bed and face a new day. Knowing God’s faithfulness in Jesus Christ gives us courage and confidence. Believing God’s mercy is new every morning provides energy to moms and dads to look after their children. The grace of God in Christ is not some pious platitude but it changes the direction of our thinking when heading out the door for another day of work. The Lord’s great faithfulness gives us strength in the morning to face the aches and pains of disease, distress and old age. You and I can say, “Good morning,” to each other in a meaningful way because God’s mercy is new every day! His compassion never fails and His loyalty is unquestionable.

Life is filled with many indications displaying the Lord’s great compassion. The aroma of His mercy greets us every morning like the aroma of freshly baked bread. By the mercies of the Lord, the ordinary day-to-day occurrences are made new. Yes, the start of a day is bursting with undeserved blessings. The Lord’s faithfulness and mercy are a tremendous boost when people’s hearts are failing them. He is faithful to forgive our sins when we are not sure if we deserve to be forgiven (1 John 1:9). We can start a fresh new day, knowing that God does not carry the sins of the previous day over into the next.

Knowing God’s mercies are new every morning should motivate us to turn off our alarm clocks, get out of bed and get going. May God’s faithfulness put a smile on your face, a song in your heart and a skip in your step. Have a good day!
