There are times when we struggle with being overly busy. There are so many demands with so little time to get things done! When we are overwhelmed by the task at hand we don’t tend to think in terms of faith, do we? Christ’s disciples did. They asked, “Increase our faith.” We blame our failures on a lack of time. If we had been in the disciples’ shoes we may have said, “Lord, give us more time! Give us a couple more hours in a day and we will accomplish what needs to get done for the advancement of your kingdom.” If we had more time, and didn’t feel so rushed, we would be able to participate in church-related activities more regularly. If we had an extra day in the week we’d spend more time with our children. If we had more time we would be more faithful in visiting the widowed, and the lonely. We’d provide spiritual comfort to those who need it.

We may think that a lack of time is holding us back from fulfilling our Christian calling. But is that really the problem? Did you notice that our Lord Jesus doesn’t correct His disciples or say to them, “You are asking for more faith but what you need is more time.” The answer Jesus gives teaches us to see that the issue is not a lack of time but a matter of faith. Acting in good faith we will not try to drum up all sorts of excuses for our failures. Instead, we are to prioritize what we do and decide what is of first importance. Are we willing to let go of non-essentials or things that take too much of our time?

What keeps us from doing what we should? Christ teaches us that the problem is not a lack of time but a lack of faith and trust in Him. The problem of being too busy is not the Lord’s fault but our own. It happens far too often that we feel stretched to the limit, being busy with things that are not wrong in themselves; yet they are keeping us from fulfilling our Christian duty.

Faith opens doors and breaks down walls. Faith loosens the tongues of those who are afraid to speak. Indeed, the engine of our Christian life is faith. A tremendous force and energy springs forth from faith. Let us proceed in faith, and find the time to do what is of first importance.
