Devotional

The Christian should never think or speak lightly of unbelief. For a child of God to mistrust his love, his truth, his faithfulness, must be greatly displeasing to him. How can we ever grieve him by doubting his upholding grace?

Christian! it is contrary to every promise of God’s precious Word that you should ever be forgotten or left to perish. If it could be so, then how could he be true who has said, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” (Isa. 49:15). What would be the value of that promise—“‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the LORD, who has compassion on you” (Isa. 54:10). Where would be the truth of Christ’s words—“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (Jn. 10:28–29). Where would be the doctrines of grace? They would be all disproved if one child of God should perish. Where would be the veracity of God, his honour, his power, his grace, his covenant, his oath, if any of those for whom Christ has died, and who have put their trust in him, should nevertheless be cast away?

Banish those unbelieving fears which so dishonour God. Arise, shake yourself from the dust, and put on your beautiful garments. Remember it’s sinful to doubt his Word in which he has promised you that you shall never perish. Let the eternal life within you express itself in confident rejoicing.

“The gospel bears my spirit up:
a faithful and unchanging God
lays the foundation for my hope,
in oaths, and promises, and blood.”
(Isaac Watts, from “How Oft Have Sin and Satan Strove”)
