Even on the Horses

In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD. —Zechariah 14:20a

Zechariah 14:20–21

Devotional

The high priest, doing his work in the sanctuary, wore on his mitre the same words that will be found on the horses when the day of the new earth comes. “Holiness unto the Lord.” That will be written upon the harnesses of the horses. With these words the prophet Zechariah is saying that one day all things will be consecrated to the service of the Lord. Man and beast, and all of creation will be renewed in perfect dedication to the Creator. We, with our defiled lips, are unable to put into words what that will be like. There will be a perfect harmony between man and beast, who together will only desire one thing: to be consecrated to the Lord.

Only the high priest bore these words upon his forehead, and only when he went into the sanctuary. But the prophet Zechariah tells us that the same words will also be written upon the bells of the horses. So there will be no special sanctuary in the midst of a wicked world, but all things will be holiness unto the Lord. Everything will be redeemed from sin and dedicated to God.

Holiness will come for sure. Because the only High Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, has borne these words not only on His head, but also in His heart. By His sacrifice the totality of creation will again be sanctified to God. Therefore, in a little while He will return on the clouds to renew the whole earth to the glory of God the Father. Then even the animals will radiate the holiness He earned for them. Scripture says that the wolf and the lamb shall feed together (Isa. 65:25), and the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp (Isa. 11:8). These are signs of peace that can never be found in this world. Have you become tired of so much that goes against God and His holiness? Is there a desire in your heart that everything within you would one day be fully dedicated to the LORD?
