THOU SHALT BRING FORTH A SON; HE SHALL BE CALLED A SON OF THE MOST HIGH

Henry T. Vriesen

Luke 1 and Matthew 1

About six months after the angel Gabriel had brought the message to Zacharias, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin of the house of David. Her name was Mary. She was engaged to marry a man by the name of Joseph, who was also of the house of David. The angel came in and said to her, “Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” And when she saw him, she was frightened. And the angel continued and said, “Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.”

Then Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be?” The angel replied, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elizabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age … for with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.” The angel of the Lord also appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife … she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”

A little later Mary decided to visit her cousin Elizabeth; so she came into the hill country into a city of Judea and saluted Zacharias and Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard her salutation, she was filled with the Holy Ghost and said, “Whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? … and blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of these things which was told her from the Lord.” And Mary replied: “My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; as he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.” The women spent about three months together and then Mary returned to her home at Nazareth.
