Ministering Spirits

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (Hebrews 1:14).

Bible Reading

Hebrews 1:

1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
3Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:
4Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
5For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
6And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
7And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
8But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
9Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
10And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
11They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
12And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
13But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
14Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Devotional

This is said of the angels of God. God sends them forth to minister unto his children. Both in the Old Testament as well as in the New we read of the various ministrations of angels. In our day, I fear, we are not much concerned about the doctrine of angels as taught in the Bible. Though it is not revealed to us just how angels work and influence our lives, that they are active in our behalf and for our benefit should be of interest to us. The Bible teaches that there are very many angels, thousands of them. "The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them."

They are very strong. We read, "Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength." They do the will of God. We read, "That do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word." They minister to those who shall be heirs of salvation. They are guardians of little children. Jesus said, "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven." Whether each child, or every believer, for that matter, has a guardian angel is not clearly stated in the Bible. But all are benefited by the ministrations of the angels. To mention one more thing the angels do: They praise, worship and glorify God. The psalmist exclaims, "Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise him in the heights. Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts." They do. Do we?

Prayer

O Lord, grant that we and all men renounce our own will, and without gainsaying obey Thy will which alone is good; that so every one may fulfill his office and calling as willingly and faithfully as the angels do in heaven. We thank Thee for all the blessings and benefits that come to us through the ministering of the angels. Continue to hold Thy protecting hand over us. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
