Harvest OPC, Grand Rapids

2021

On this day in 1989, Griggs Street Chapel in Grand Rapids, Michigan changed its name to Harvest OPC to honor the Lord of the harvest. Begun in 1979 after Burton Heights Christian Reformed Church closed its mission work on Griggs Street, the chapel was first led by Henry Buikema as the Grandville Gospel Fellowship. The name was changed to Griggs Street Chapel when Mr. Buikema purchased the building on Griggs for $1. Buikema served Griggs Street Chapel until 1981, when Robert Borger became pastor. Borger served there until 1986. Calvin Malcor led the congregation in their move to Calvin Christian Elementary School in 1991. Mr. Malcor remained with the congregation until 1995, when Dale Van Dyke was called. Along with Pastor Van Dyke, Jeffrey Shamess and Wayne Veenstra have served as associate pastors at Harvest Church. Harvest OPC, now located on 52nd St. in Wyoming, Michigan, is herself engaged in church planting. A daughter work, New City Fellowship, meets only a few blocks from the original Griggs Street location.
