On Thursday, June 4, 1981, the Forty-eighth General Assembly adopted the recommendation of Advisory Committee 9 that the Rev. Charles G. Dennison be appointed as Historian of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

Ordained in 1972 in the Presbytery of New Jersey, Dennison served as pastor of Fairfield Church, Independent (1972–76) and Grace OPC, Sewickley, Pennsylvania (1976–99). As Historian, he edited the historical volumes The Orthodox Presbyterian Church: 1936–1986 and Pressing Toward the Mark, and was the writer and director of The Orthodox Presbyterian Church: A Video History. Following his death, Committee for the Historian members Danny Olinger and David Thompson edited a collection of his historical writings entitled History for a Pilgrim People.
