Edward J. Young

2022

On this date in 1957, the Rev. Edward J. Young, as the previous moderator, opened the worship service preceding the Twenty-fourth General Assembly of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church held at Immanuel OPC, West Collingswood, New Jersey. In his sermon, “The Troubler of Israel” from 1 Kings 18:17–18, Dr. Young lamented the existing climate in Christendom where doctrinal differences were being ignored so that churches and individuals might unite in programs and activities. In the midst of such a climate, those who preach the truth of God’s Word and insist on the exclusive claims of Jesus are the ones considered to be the troublers in Israel. However, said Young, those who preach the true gospel and stand by sound doctrine are not the disturbers of the peace of the church. Rather, they are the ones who are working most effectively toward the true peace of the true church, which is the only peace worth having in the church. In the spirit of the prophet Elijah, and the greater Elijah, Jesus Christ, Young urged that the minsters of the OPC would continue to proclaim the whole counsel of God for God’s glory and the church’s good.

In the communion service which followed, Dr. Young was assisted by pastors C. Herbert Oliver and Glenn Coie, and by ruling elders Wilfred Moses of West Collingswood, Charles Johnston of Center Square, Pennsylvania, Albert Eisentrager of Philadelphia, H. Barker of Long Beach, California, J. Craig of Harrisville, Pennsylvania, and Wilfred Gesch of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin.
