March 29 Today in OPC History

On this date in 1946, a fire destroyed the church building of Calvary Community Church in Harmony, New Jersey. Just six years earlier, the congregation, pastored by Lewis Grotenhuis, had purchased the building of Harmony Methodist Church for $3,500. The only items that were saved from destruction were the communion table, some pews and books. The congregation met at the Harmony Public School while it worked on the construction of a new building. On July 14, 1946, the cornerstone of the new church building was laid. Exactly one year later, on March 29, 1947, the first worship service was held in the new building.
