The Lord Shall Preserve Thee

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: He shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore (Psalm 121:7, 8).

Bible Reading

Psalm 121:

1I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
3He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
8The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Devotional

Satan is the enemy of our souls. He and all his hosts seek to destory us. All the powers of darkness are set against the kingdom of God, and believers are the objects of their attacks. In our own strength we could not stand for a moment against our spiritual enemies. From whence shall our help come? Our help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Our help is sure. It comes, and it comes from the Lord, from him who made heaven and earth, that is from Almighty God. Against him no enemies can stand. They shall all be made his footstool. Our Almighty Helper watches over his own by day and by night. He does not slumber nor sleep. He preserves them from all evil. He preserveth the souls of his saints. They shall even be blessed with earthly blessings, as was Israel, God's people, when they harkened unto God's voice. We read, "Blessed shall thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out." And here in our psalm we read, "The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." The Lord supplies every need of body and soul. He guides and directs his children from the cradle to the grave, and gives them a place in his everlasting kingdom).

May we be enabled to say with the psalmist; "And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting. and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen."

Prayer

O Lord, help us to be thankful for all Thy goodness, and to praise Thee for all Thy faithfulness. Help us to magnify Thy great and holy name, and to triumph in Thy praise. May we say with thy servant of old; Blessed be the Lord of Israel from everlasting, and let all the people say, Amen. O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, for his mercy endureth for ever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Praise ye the Lord. Amen.
