On November 10, 1991, the Rev. Luther Craig Long, a constituting member of the Presbyterian Church of America (later renamed Orthodox Presbyterian Church) died and entered into the presence of the Lord. In 1932, Long helped establish the independent congregation, Calvin Presbyterian Church in New Haven, Connecticut. On April 30, 1936, the congregation moved into a new building and Long’s mentor and friend J. Gresham Machen preached. Two months later, the congregation voted to apply for membership in the Presbytery of New York and New England and it was received as Christ Presbyterian Church of New Haven. In 1944, the congregation relocated to the city of Hamden, and in 1956 the name was changed to Westminster OPC.

Having earned academic degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S.), Princeton Seminary (Th.B.), Columbia University (M.A.) and a Ph. D. in Psychology from New York University, Long served as the Director of psychological services at Danville State Mental Hospital from 1962 to 1973. In 1966, he served as the organizing pastor of Tri-County OPC in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. He would remain the pastor of Tri-County OPC until his retirement in 1975.
