Twilight: God's Life-Giving Breath

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

These readings focus on the Holy Spirit. In the Old Covenant (or Testament), the Spirit "anoints" one person here and one there to perform a special work for God. In the New Covenant, the Spirit is "poured out" like rain on the whole church of Christ.

Bible Reading:

Psalm 104:24–35

Bible Text:

When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth (Ps. 104:30).

Devotional:

God created the world. But he did not retire after his work of creation. God is continually active in this world today, maintaining it and unfolding its potential.

Creation runs by God's rules. Knowing these rules, we can predict the time of sunrise and sunset. We can trace wind and weather patterns. We can study the causes and explain the effects of the rise and fall of nations and of the onset and development of illness.

Yet the regularity of God's rule should not blind us to God's power and freedom. Everyone and all things depend on God for their existence. "All look to you to give them their food.... When you open your hand, they are satisfied.... When you hide your face, they are terrified."

Springtime is predictable. It is also an annual work of God. We must see more than grass and buds and flowers. The eye of faith beholds the majesty of God. His creative power is in evidence. His Breath or Spirit goes forth—as in the original creation—and God renews the face of the earth.

The Power is here, for God is here. The world is not forsaken; God rules and God provides. God does his mighty work of recreation by his Word and by his Spirit.

Therefore let all that has breath praise the LORD.
