Twilight: The Revelation of Salvation

by the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In September we read Paul's letter to Titus and his very last letter, called 2 Timothy. Paul's concern is that the true gospel be preserved and proclaimed by a faithful church.

Bible Reading:

2 Timothy 1:8–14

Bible Text:

[Grace] has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought light through the gospel (2 Tim. 1:10).

Devotional:

The source of our salvation lies in God's eternal love. God forgives us because he loves us. How much he loves us has been revealed in the death and resurrection of Jesus. There we see the ground of our salvation.

This is what Jesus did: "[He] has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light." By abolishing death, Jesus made it powerless, ineffective, harmless. Death is still around, but (for us, at least) it cannot do any real harm. The sting is out of it.

In the Old Testament there are hints of the immortal life God has in store for his children. In the New Testament there's a flood of light on the subject. Christ's resurrection is the decisive turning point.

Our faith is always tested in the face of death. When Paul wrote this letter, he was fairly sure he was going to be executed. Death stared him in the face. But he knew that he was on the brink of immortality. Faith in Christ assured him of that.

If the work of Jesus is the basis of our hope, we don't even fear the moment of our death. Our salvation implies that death is a gate to fuller life.

God's grace is wider than our horizons.
