Twilight: The Unwavering Promise

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

Isaiah's God is the Holy One of Israel. In God's presence we have to be morally clean. God has chosen his Servant, who will rule in righteousness in a kingdom of peace.

Bible Reading:

Isaiah 54:9–13

Bible Text:

"Though the mountains be shaken ... yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken" (Isa. 54:10).

Devotional:

In the days of Noah, God made a covenant with creation. God swore to be tolerant in spite of humanity's moral and spiritual pollution.

Because of that covenant God does not destroy our planet. Day follows night, and night follows day. Autumn follows summer, and spring follows winter.

God keeps the appointed seasons—not because the world is any better than it was in the days of Noah, but because God made a promise. God's faithfulness in this covenant with creation (which everyone can see) is proof that his love will never die.

At certain times, however, we cannot see God's faithfulness in the covenant with creation. There are terrifying moments when human beings think God is about to wipe us off the map. An earthquake topples buildings and splits the earth, and we wonder if the world is coming to an end. Floods and tidal waves wipe out towns and destroy crops, and we find it hard to believe that God has sworn not to drown us again.

God knows about our fears and, through the prophet, offers reassurance:

"Though the mountains be shaken
and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed."

Even if the mountains would fall into the sea, and if the sun would not shine in summer, nor the fruit ripen in fall, God cannot possibly forget what he has sworn to us in Christ.

God loves us.
