How good are your eyes? If you have 20/20 vision your eyes are in good shape. Not every person is blessed with good eyesight. Many individuals need glasses, contact lenses or surgery to correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness or general blurred vision. Some people are born blind or they lose their eyesight through disease.

The Bible speaks of our spirituality in terms of vision. The spiritually blind live without God and without hope. They eat, drink and have fun but are oblivious of the consequences of their behaviour. Sometimes God strikes His people with blindness because they refuse to acknowledge Him as Lord and they reject the need for salvation.

Near-sighted individuals get wrapped up in their own little world. They focus their attention on a career, family, friends and hobbies. Anything beyond that is fuzzy and blurred. They have no vision for the future because they do not know the goal and purpose of life. Far-sighted Christians do the opposite. They know the Lord has a plan and purpose and believe the message of the Bible to be true, but they do not know how to apply God's Word to their daily lives.

By nature every person in this world is spiritually blind. God restores our eyesight so that we begin to know ourselves, the world, and the goal of human existence. We come to see the great need for salvation in Christ. John Calvin expressed it this way, “The creation, preservation and government of all matters can only be understood properly through the glasses of Holy Scripture.” Without the infallible Word of God as our guide we are like the blind leading the blind.

Eyesight usually gets worse with age. With the eyes of faith our vision improves the more we mature in faith. We avoid becoming short-sighted and gain insight for living by drawing near to God and being led by His Word. It is in this way that David’s eyes are turned toward the Lord when he is in trouble. He knows the Lord’s vision is far better than his own. Knowing that the LORD sees beforehand (providence) where everything will lead, David is confident that the Lord will pluck his feet from the net. May our eyes be ever turned toward the Lord, confident that He will fulfil His plan through Jesus Christ.
