Life Issues

Peter G. Feenstra

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their cry....
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears,
And delivers them out of all their troubles. (Ps. 34:15, 17)

Devotional

There are certain things that at one time you considered important, but with more life experience you realize they are meaningless. A young boy obsessed with sports will concentrate on all the goals he scored and the wonderful plays he made. Someday he will come to realize that none of this will be recorded in the Book of Life. A young woman may be absorbed with academic excellence, or talking to her friends about the guy who smiled at her, but neither will be a concern when she is old and frail and is eagerly waiting to meet her Saviour.

There are times when you need to ask: “Why am I doing what I am doing? Does it have any value, benefit or purpose?” The Bible confronts you with a question that you may not leave unanswered: “What does it benefit you to believe in God?” Does it help you to face life issues when you believe God created the world and still upholds it by His hand? Does it change your life to know that Jesus Christ suffered, died and rose from the dead, and that He is now in heaven? How does the Christian faith benefit children, teens and adults?

These are questions that you shouldn’t shrug off or refuse to think about deeply. Faith in Christ should touch every area of life. Just think of the times you have been asked questions about your faith and you responded with something like, “I don’t know! Why are you asking me?” Faith in Christ changes everything that happens in your life. It changes your perspective on death and dying, joy and grief, pain and suffering, happiness and family struggles.

Being righteous before God allows us to live with great confidence. The psalmist says in Psalm 34, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry.” Children of God can rest assured, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.” With the eyes of faith you start to see how God has taken hold of your life by establishing an eternal covenant of grace with you. The most burning issue isn't, “What do other people think of me? How do I rate with my peers and colleagues?” The Christian faith confronts you with the most important issue of life: Are you righteous before God? Through Christ you are declared and judged righteous and that makes all the difference!
