Writing on Your Hand

Peter G. Feenstra

Devotional

Where the Spirit of Christ is at work, people repent of their sins and the direction of their life is changed. Spirit-filled people are alive for the Lord because they belong to a mighty God and a faithful Saviour. They are not afraid to say, “I belong to the Lord.” The prophet Isaiah speaks of this very beautifully in chapter 44. Those who receive the Spirit of Christ will not hesitate to proclaim God’s claim. Isaiah writes, “This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s,’ another will call on the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’ and name himself by the name of Israel.” (ESV) In the phrase, “I belong to the LORD” the Hebrew places “LORD’ in a position of emphasis. A person controlled by the Holy Spirit will state, without hesitation, “I belong to the Lord.” He is owned by the LORD who has established a relationship with him.

Association with the Lord is not embarrassing but something children of God will want to display very publicly. Isaiah 44 speaks about how the people of God will write His name on their hand. We do many things with our hands. We use them to do our daily work, eat, drive a vehicle, type an e-mail, text a message, do our school work, play a musical instrument etc. Hands are used for greeting one another, for an encouraging pat on the shoulder, for massaging a hurting body, and for showing affection. Sometimes we write reminders on our hands.

When the Spirit of God penetrates into our hearts, the LORD’s Name ought to be written on our hands. What a wonderful reminder! Isaiah 44:5 encourages us to use our hands for God’s glory. Our deeds are to reflect our awareness that we belong to Him who has and continues to provide for all our needs. Isn’t it comforting to know that even when our hands are deformed or cannot function the way they ought, they still belong to our faithful covenant God?

The Lord Jesus Christ has purchased every part of our body and soul. May He who holds us in His hand purge our hands from every form of evil so that we are willing to reach out in Christian love and touch others in their need. Let us work with willing hands, being mindful that we have the name of the LORD written on them.
