I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel. Philippians 1:12

Philippians 1:1–11

Devotional

Do you have a passion and love for the gospel? Does the church gathering work of the Lord Jesus thrill you and do you wish to see the advancement of His work in this world? The congregation at Philippi was deeply concerned about the progress and advance of the gospel. That’s why Paul’s imprisonment gave them a heavy heart. Will this cause others to shrink back in fear? Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem, falsely accused of desecrating the temple. He was shut away in prison, first in Caesarea and then in Rome. He longed to come to Rome as a preacher but he arrived as a prisoner. Will his negative circumstances halt the spread of the gospel?

Paul reports with thankfulness that what the Philippians feared has not happened! His chains allow the gospel to reach people in high places. Two Roman governors, Felix and Festus, along with King Herod Agrippa, hear Paul speak about his faith in Jesus Christ. One of these governors frequently sends for Paul because he is fascinated by what he has to say. On his way to Rome, Paul is able to talk about the Lord Jesus to those who are on the ship with him. Paul’s imprisonment gives him opportunities he wouldn’t have had if he had remained free.

What appeared to be a big blow to Christian mission turned out to be a major boost! Paul wants the Philippians to know this, and that is why he focuses on it in the verses 12–14. He says, “But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel.” The apostle uses a vivid word for “furtherance”. It is a military term depicting a group of woodcutters clearing a path through a forest for an advancing army. Paul’s imprisonment clears the way so that the gospel reaches places where it has never been before.

Paul’s experience encourages his fellow workers to proclaim the good news with boldness and courage (1:14). May the proclamation of the gospel also be the love of our life. Encourage ministers and missionaries to speak the gospel. Let’s not shy away from seeking the advancement of God’s kingdom and church. Pray that the Lord make us courageous and enthusiastic.
