Devotional

Where do you turn for daily strength? Do you let fear paralyze you, preventing you from doing God’s will? Sometimes people make bold assertions but their words are not backed up by deeds. Their plans wither because they are overcome by fear and the pressures of others.

The apostle Paul faces many daunting, difficult and different challenges but does not shy away from what God calls him to do! He makes a very bold claim, telling the believers at Philippi that he can do all things! Note well, however, Paul does not say, “I can do all things as long as I am given enough time,” or, “I can do all things as long as people are cooperative,” or, “I can do all things as long as I believe in myself.” He completes his sentence by telling us Christ is the source of his strength. He writes, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Being in union with Christ, the apostle has the resources to handle every situation.

There were times in Paul’s ministry when he stood alone. He was opposed by Alexander the coppersmith and no one came to his defence. “But,” he writes, “the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.” (2 Timothy 4:17) Christ is the source and fountain of wisdom and energy. Being in union with Christ is truly wonderful! We are not left to muddle and struggle along, against all odds. Christ fills us with energy and power that enables us to face each new day.

Do you know that kind of relationship with Christ? Does Paul’s confession find its place in your life? The Christian life is not about us and our accomplishments. Neither is it a life in which our own person is erased and Christ does everything. Notice the balance in the phrase, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Having received strength we are, in a manner of speaking, to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Prayers for daily strength need to ascend to God’s throne from our kitchen tables and bedrooms. Be bold in faith and do not let fear hold you back! Your Saviour gave His life for you so that you can move forward courageously and confidently, going from strength to strength.
