He That Hath an Ear

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God (Revelation 2:7).

Bible Reading

Revelation 2:1-7:

1Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;
2I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
3And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
4Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
5Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
6But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.
7He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

Devotional

Let us never forget that the Bible is a divine book. In it God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit. How is our spiritual hearing? Some people's ears are "dull of hearing." Some people refuse to hear, when God speaks. He says: "I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not, and I called you, but ye answered not." How often does God say, Give ear to me, or give ear to my words, and how often do we refuse to hear? Pleadingly God says: "Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth." Again, "Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live." Should we not give diligent heed? We must remember, "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." God's word is not a vain thing to us, because it is our life. Jesus said to the Jews, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." Jesus said to his disciples, Blessed are your ears for they hear.

One more thought: He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? The ears of the Lord are open unto the cry of the righteous. "I cried unto God . . . and he gave ear unto me." Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call unto him as long as I live."

Prayer

Our Father, we thank Thee that it has pleased Thee to speak unto us. If Thou hadst never spoken we could never know Thee, and we would not know how to be saved. Thy words are words of life unto us. May we therefore not be cold and indifferent to them but grant Thou us ears to hear, and grace to search the Scriptures diligently, that we may have a true knowledge of the truth, and faith to believe with the heart unto righteousness, and to confess with the mouth unto salvation. May we be doers of Thy word, not hearers only. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
