Psalm 119:49–56

Devotional

No matter what your particular need may be, you can readily find some promise in the Bible that suits it.

Are you faint and feeble because your way is rough and you are weary? Here is the promise—“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (Isa. 40:29). When you read such a promise, take it back to the great Promiser, and ask him to fulfil his own Word.

Are you seeking after Christ, and thirsting for closer communion with him? This promise shines like a star upon you—“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Mt. 5:6). Take that promise to the throne continually; do not plead anything else, but go to God over and over again with this—“Lord, you have said it, do as you have said.”

Are you distressed because of sin, and burdened with the heavy load of your iniquities? Listen to these words—“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more” (Isa. 43:25). You have no merit of your own to plead why he should pardon you, but plead his written promises and he will perform them.

Are you afraid lest you should not be able to hold on to the end, lest, after having thought yourself a child of God, you should be disqualified? If that is your state, take this Word of grace to the throne and plead it—“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed” (Isa. 54:10).

If you have lost the sweet sense of the Saviour’s presence, and are seeking him with a sorrowful heart, remember the promises—“Return to me ... and I will return to you” (Zech. 1:3); “For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back” (Isa. 54:7).

Feast your faith on God’s own Word, and whatever your fears or needs, go often and regularly to the Bank of Faith with your Father’s signed cheques, saying “Remember your Word to your servant, for you have given me hope” (Ps. 119:49).
